Saying that calibre is ebook-management software undersells the application by a fair margin. Calibre is an open-source Swiss Army knife for ebooks that can be used for everything from creating ebooks, converting ebooks from obscure formats to modern formats like EPUB, to serving up an ebook library over the web. The most recent major release, calibre 8.0, brings a better text-to-speech engine, a tool for creating audio overlays when authoring ebooks, support for profiles in the ebook viewer, and more.

José Marchesi and David Faust kicked off the BPF track at the 2025 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management, and BPF Summit with an extra-long session on what they have been doing to support compiling to BPF in GCC. Overall, the project is slowly working toward full support for BPF, with most of the self-tests now passing using Faust's in-progress patches. However, the progress toward that goal has turned up a number of problems with how Clang supports BPF that needed to be discussed at length to find a path forward for both projects.

Ryan Sipes has announced efforts to expand Thunderbird's offerings with web services to "enhance the experience of using Thunderbird". The planned services include hosted email, appointment scheduling, a revival of Firefox Send, and (of course) an AI assistant based on a partnership with Flower AI. The AI features will "always be optional for use by people who want them". Sipes is managing director of product for Thunderbird's parent organization, MZLA Technologies Corporation. Outgoing Fedora Project Leader (FPL) Matthew Miller has announced his successor, Jef Spaleta. Some of you may remember Jef's passionate voice in the early Fedora community. He got involved all the way back in the days of fedora.us, before Red Hat got involved. Jef served on the Fedora Board from July 2007 through the end of 2008. This was the critical time after Fedora Extras and Fedora Core merged into one Fedora Linux where, with the launch of the "Features" process, Fedora became a truly community-led project. Spaleta will be joining Red Hat full time in May and Miller will be formally handing off FPL duties at the Flock conference in June.

Version 2.0 of PorteuX, a distribution based on Slackware Linux, has been released. This release adds the ability to test experimental Wayland sessions for the Cinnamon, LXQt, and Xfce desktops. PorteuX 2.0 updates the Linux kernel to 6.14 and includes many package updates and bug fixes. Users have the choice of PorteuX stable or its rolling release called current. See the install.txt for instructions on installing PorteuX to disk.

The CPU's translation lookaside buffer (TLB) caches the results of virtual-address translations, significantly speeding memory accesses. TLB misses are expensive, so a lot of thought goes into using the TLB as efficiently as possible. Reducing pressure on the TLB was the topic of Rik van Riel's memory-management-track session at the 2025 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management, and BPF Summit. Some approaches were considered, but the session was short on firm conclusions.

For those of you who still have dedicated audio players: version 4.0 of Rockbox, a replacement firmware for many players, has been released. Over the last few months, our Node.js team has explored how to leverage large language models (LLMs) using JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js. UDNs can be utilized for containerized pods and virtual machines (VMs) from OpenShift based workloads. UDNs allow OpenShift users to create isolated tenant networks for their workloads. By leveraging UDNs, administrators can create secure networks, workload isolation, streamlined IP management, and access to advanced networking features. The kernel's slab allocator is charged with providing small objects on demand; its performance and reliability are crucial for the functioning of the system as a whole. At the 2025 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management, and BPF Summit, two adjacent sessions in the memory-management track dug into current work on the slab allocator. The first focused on the new sheaves feature, while the second discussed a set of allocation functions that are safe to call in any context.

From the LibreQoS site comes the sad news that Dave Täht has passed away. Among many other things, he bears a lot of credit for our networks functioning as well as they do. "We're incredibly grateful to have Dave as our friend, mentor, and as someone who continuously inspired us – showing us that we could do better for each other in the world, and leverage technology to make that happen. As he has in some previous editions of the Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management, and BPF Summit (LSFMM+BPF), Fred Knight gave an update on the status of various storage standards this year. In it, he looked at changes to the NVM Express (NVMe) standards in some detail. He also updated attendees on the fairly small changes that have come to the SCSI (T10) and ATA (T13) standards over the last few years.

The kernel's kexec mechanism allows one kernel to directly boot a new one; it can be thought of as a sort of kernel equivalent to the execve() system call. Kexec has a number of uses, including booting a special kernel to perform dumps after a crash. Normally, one does not expect user-space processes to survive booting into a new kernel, but that has not stopped developers from trying to implement that ability. Mike Rapoport ran a memory-management-track session at the 2025 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management, and BPF Summit to discuss one piece of that problem: enabling the contents of memory to persist across a kexec handover so that the new kernel can pick up where the old one left off.

The virtual memory area (VMA), represented by struct vm_area_struct, is one of the core abstractions of the kernel's memory-management subsystem; a VMA represents a portion of a process's address space with the same characteristics. A memory-mapped file will be represented by (at least) one VMA, as will the process's stack or a region of anonymous memory. Efficiently managing VMAs and the logic around them is crucial for good performance overall. Lorenzo Stoakes focused on one specific problem area: the merging of anonymous VMAs, during the memory-management track at the 2025 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management, and BPF Summit.

Migration is the act of moving data from one location in physical memory to another. The kernel may migrate pages for many reasons, including defragmentation, improving NUMA locality, moving data to or from memory hosted on a peripheral device, or freeing a range of memory for other uses. Given the importance of migration to the memory-management subsystem, there is a lot of interest in improving its performance and removing impediments to its success. Several sessions in the memory-management track of the 2025 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management, and BPF Summit were dedicated to this topic.

The effort to ensure that open-source software is reproducible has been gathering steam over the years, and gaining traction with major Linux distributions. Debian, for example, has been working toward reproducible builds for more than a decade; it can now produce official live CDs of the current stable release that are reproducible. Fedora started on the path much later, but it has progressed far enough that the project is now considering a change proposal for the Fedora 43 development cycle, expected to be released in October, with a goal of making 99% of Fedora's package builds reproducible. So far, reaction to the proposal seems favorable and focused primarily on how to achieve the goal—with minimal pain for packagers—rather than whether to attempt it.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a general-purpose platform for running a wide variety of workloads and use cases. Welcome to the ZipCPU blog. I started it years ago after building my own soft core CPU, the ZipCPU, and dedicated this blog to helping individuals stay out of FPGA Hell. I then transitioned from working on the ZipCPU, to building bus components that might be used by every project–crossbars, bridges, DMAs and such. KDE contributor David Edmundson has published a blog post about improving KDE Plasma's login experience by replacing SDDM with a new Plasma Login Manager. It's worth stressing nothing is official or set in stone yet, whilst it has come up in previous Plasma online meetings and in the 2023 Akademy. I'm posting this whilst starting a more official discussion on the plasma-devel mailing list. Oliver Beard and I have made a new mutli-process greeter, that uses the same startup mechanism as the desktop session. It doesn't have all the features that we propose at the start of the blog, but an architecture where features and services can be slowly and safely added. That discussion is here for those who would like to follow along. The prototype is currently in two repositories: plasma-login for the frontend work, and plasma-login-manager, which is a fork of SDDM.

In a keynote on the final day of SCALE 22x, Denver Gingerich said that he wanted to talk "a little bit about a router and also the big picture around that router". Gingerich is the director of compliance at the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), which is the organization behind the OpenWrt One router that LWN looked at back in November. The router is, of course, based on firmware from the OpenWrt project, which got its start because of GPL-enforcement activities and is a member project at the SFC.

Ubuntu 23.10 and 24.04 LTS introduced a feature using AppArmor to restrict access to user namespaces. Qualys has reported three ways to bypass AppArmor's restrictions and enable local users to gain full administrative capabilities within a user namespace. Ubuntu has followed up with a post that explains the namespace-restriction feature in detail, and says these bypasses do not constitute security vulnerabilities. One recurring criticism of Rust has been that the language has no official specification. This is a barrier to adoption in some safety-conscious organizations, as well as to writing alternate language implementations. Now, the Rust project has announced that it will be adopting the Ferrocene Language Specification (FLS) developed by Ferrous Systems and maintaining it as part of the core project. While this may not satisfy die-hard standardization-process enthusiasts, it's a step toward removing another barrier to using Rust in safety-critical systems. It's in that light that we're pleased to announce that we'll be adopting the FLS into the Rust Project as part of our ongoing specification efforts. This adoption is being made possible by the gracious donation of the FLS by Ferrous Systems. We're grateful to them for the work they've done in assembling the FLS, in making it fit for qualification purposes, in promoting its use and the use of Rust generally in safety-critical industries, and now, for working with us to take the next step and to bring the FLS into the Project.

Arthur Cohen has posted a massive series of patches in four parts (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4) upstreaming all of the recent work on the GCC Rust front end. These changes include the Polonius borrow checker, the foreign-function interface, inline assembly support, if-let statement handling, multiple built-in derive macros, for loops, and more.

The 2024 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management, and BPF Summit included a tense session on the use of Rust code in the kernel's filesystem layer. The Rust topic returned in 2025 in a session run by Andreas Hindborg, with a scope that also covered the storage and memory-management layers. A lot of progress has been made, and the discussion was less adversarial this year, but there are still process issues that need to be worked out.

Since 2005, more than 13,500 developers from more than 1,300 different companies have contributed to the Linux kernel. Additionally, there are many kernel versions, and developers update the code constantly, distributing that code to developers who are working on various distributions of Linux. Akamai now delivers the infrastructure that these developers and their users rely on, at no cost, supporting the Git environments developers use to access kernel sources quickly, regardless of where they're based.

MicroShift provides a closer alignment with Red Hat OpenShift than other Kubernetes distributions, such as Kind, and lowers the risk of running into a "it works on my machine" type situation. Boudhayan Bhattcharya has posted a lengthy article about the announcement that the Freedesktop project is dropping OpenH264 from the Freedesktop SDK for Flatpak applications and runtimes. Some Flatpak applications that depend on the Freedesktop runtime version 23.08 will lose H.264 playback support starting with the release scheduled for April, unless application developers replace it with the ffmpeg-full extension. The 24.08 runtime is unaffected, and future releases will include a new codecs-extra extension to replace OpenH264 that includes FFmpeg with support for a number of patented codecs. Considering all things, I think and hope we made the correct decision and hopefully the new org.freedesktop.Platform.codecs-extra works out. libx264, libx265 and others are built from source and there are no binaries or extra-data involved. So we should theoretically be able to patch and fix any issues that come up in the future. Apart from all this, I'm slightly worried at the prospects of legal issues cropping up with this setup and also that the new extension contains "too much", but we will have to see where things flow.

By the time that Linus Torvalds released the 6.14 kernel, 11,003 non-merge changesets had been pulled into the mainline, making this one of the smallest releases we have seen in some time. Indeed, one must go back to the 4.0 release, which happened almost exactly ten years ago, to find a release with fewer changesets than 6.14. Even so, "small" is relative, and 6.14 contains a lot of significant changes.

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has announced the results of its recent board of directors election. Ruth Suehle and McCoy Smith are new to the board, while Carlo Piana will serve another term. The results, however, seem tainted in the eyes of some participants and observers. The election has been plagued by missteps from the beginning. It has culminated with the exclusion of three candidates for failing to meet a requirement to sign the OSI board agreement, which was added after the election was over and before results were tallied or announced.

As a system runs and its memory becomes fragmented, allocating large, physically contiguous regions of memory becomes increasingly difficult. Much effort over the years has gone into avoiding the need to make such allocations whenever possible, but there are times when they simply cannot be avoided. The kernel's contiguous memory allocator (CMA) subsystem attempts to make such allocations possible, but it has never been a perfect solution. Suren Baghdasaryan is is trying to improve that situation with the guaranteed contiguous memory allocator patch set, which includes work from Minchan Kim as well.

Julien Malka has called for the NixOS project to use build-reproducibility to detect when a program has a maintainer-generated tarball that results in a different artifact than building from source. There are good reasons for projects to release maintainer-generated tarballs, but since the materials included in them are usually documentation, extra build scripts, and so on, it makes sense to check that they don't influence the final build output. While this would not have stopped last year's XZ backdoor, it would have made it harder to hide. People are often convinced that OSS is more trustworthy than closed-source software because the code can be audited by practitioners and security professionals in order to detect vulnerabilities or backdoors. In this instance, this procedure has been made difficult by the fact that part of the code activating the backdoor was not included in the sources available within the git repository but was instead present in the maintainer-provided tarball. While this was used to hide the backdoor out of sight of most investigating eyes, this is also an opportunity for us to improve our software supply chain security processes.

Brendan Jackman has been working to try to get ahead of the next hardware CPU vulnerability before it gets discovered. In January, he posted the second version of a patch set that introduces address-space isolation (ASI) as a way of preventing future CPU vulnerabilities from leaking important information. The core concept is to ensure that data that is not currently needed is not present in memory, so that speculative execution cannot leak it. The work is nowhere near ready to be incorporated into the mainline kernel — not least of all because it has a large performance impact in its current form — but it is likely to once again be a topic of discussion at the 2025 Linux Filesystem, Memory Management, and BPF Summit.

The Asahi Linux project, working to support Linux on Apple hardware, has published a progress report to coincide with the 6.14 kernel release. Now that Rust for Linux abstractions are starting to be merged at a healthy pace, we are faced with an emerging challenge. It is rare for any kernel patch to survive the mailing list without at least a couple of non-trivial changes, and Rust abstractions are no exception. Every time an abstraction used by our driver is merged, we must drop our downstream version and rebase the driver atop the version accepted upstream. This is grueling, menial, and unpleasant work, and Janne has our deepest gratitude for volunteering his time to get through it.

뉴스 보도와 짜장면 배달은 닮았다. 배달은 ‘신속’해야 한다. 배는 고픈데 배달이 늦으면 다시는 그 집에 음식을 주문하고 싶지 않을 것이다. 배달은 또 ‘정확’해야 한다. 짜장면이 먹고 싶어서 짜장면을 시켰는데 짬뽕이 오면 “헐~ ” 소리가 절로 나올 것이다. 짜장면은 또 ‘맛’이 있어야 한다. 아무리 신속하고 정확하게 배달이 된 짜장면이라도 맛이 없다면 낭패다. 뉴스도 마찬가지다. 뉴스 생산자인 언론 매체가 뉴스 소비자인 일반 국민에게 신속하고 정확하게 뉴스를 전달해야 한다. 뉴스의 신속성이 결여돼 이미 다 알고 있는 뉴스를 전달한다면 이미 뉴스가 아니다. 또 정확한 뉴스도 언론의 생명이다. 악의적 오보는 말할 것도 없고 선의의 오보도 주의해야 한다. ‘신속’과 ‘정확’은 반비례다. 팩트를 확인하고 또 확인하다 보면 뉴스배달이 지체된다. 그렇다고 너무 늦게 배달하면 아무리 정확한 뉴스라도 이미 뉴스의 기능을 잃어버린다.  ‘신속’, ‘정확’과 함께 뉴스는 ‘맛’이 있어야 한다. 즉, 뉴스가 독자들의 눈에, 시청자들의 귀에 쏙쏙 들어와야 한다는 것이다. 몇 번을 읽어봐도 도무지 이해가 가지 않는 기사나 몇 번을 들어도 도대체 무슨 말인지 모를 뉴스는 맛없는 짜장면과 같다. ‘신속’, ‘정확’, ‘맛’ 중에서 우선 순위를 꼽으라면 나는 정확을 꼽고 싶다. 확인되지 않은 뉴스는 차라리 내보내지 말아야 한다. 뉴스의 ‘맛’을 내려고 ‘초’를 쳐서도 곤란하다. ‘초’란 기사를 과장하거나 가공하는 것을 말하는 기자들 사이의 은어다. ‘맛’이 조금 떨어지더라도 과장하거나 가공하지 않은 정확한 뉴스여야 한다.  속보 경쟁…

GNOME 48 ("Bengaluru") has been released. As usual, this release includes a number of new features and enhancements including support for shortcuts in the Orca screen reader on Wayland, new fonts, addition of image editing to Image Viewer, and more. The GNOME 48 release also adds new applications to the GNOME Circle collection, such as Drum Machine and the Iotas note-taking application. Modern CPUs all have multiple hardware vulnerabilities that the kernel needs to mitigate; the 6.13 kernel has workarounds for 14 security-sensitive CPU bugs just on x86_64. Several of those have multiple variants, or multiple mitigations that apply on different microarchitectures. There are different kernel command-line options for each of these mitigations, which leads to a confusing situation for users trying to figure out how to configure their systems. David Kaplan recently posted a patch set that adds a single, unified command-line option for controlling mitigations and simplifies the logic for detecting, configuring, and applying them as well. If it is merged, the patch set could make it much easier for users to navigate the complicated web of CPU vulnerabilities and their mitigations.

Version 7.1 of PeerTube, a tool for sharing videos online, has been released. Notable features in this release include improved support for the Podcast 2.0 standard, better playback stability, and a new view protocol enabled by default to allow PeerTube to handle more simultaneous viewers. /e⁠/⁠OS is a privacy-centric, open-source mobile operating system that has primarily been targeted at mobile phones, with only a few community supported images available for tablet devices. In December, Murena—a company that sells devices with /⁠e⁠/⁠OS preinstalled—announced that /⁠e⁠/⁠OS now officially supports tablets as well, starting with the Pixel tablet. The user experience is close enough to mainstream alternatives to make it attractive, but there are some under-the-hood problems that may give users pause.

A security company called Fenrisk has posted an overview of a pair of claimed successful supply-chain attacks on the Fedora and openSUSE distributions. We successfully identified vulnerabilities in the Pagure, the Git forge used by Fedora to store their package definitions. We also compromised Open Build Service, the all-in-one toolchain used and developed by the openSUSE project for compilation and packaging. Their exploitation by malicious actors would have led to the compromise of all the packages of the distributions Fedora and openSUSE, as well as their downstream distributions, impacting millions of Linux servers and desktops.

Wholesale replacement of core utilities at the heart of a Linux distribution is no small matter, which is why Canonical's VP of engineering, Jon Seager, has released oxidizr. It is a command-line utility that helps users easily enable or disable the Rust-based utilities to test their suitability. Seager is calling for help with testing and for users to provide feedback with their experiences ahead of a possible switch for Ubuntu 25.10, an interim release scheduled for October 2025. So far, responses from the Ubuntu community seem positive if slightly skeptical of such a major change.

Version 12.00 of the SystemRescue live Linux system has been released. SystemRescue is an Arch Linux based bootable toolkit for repairing systems in the event of a crash. Notable changes in this release include an update to Linux 6.12.19, support for bcachefs, and a number of updated disk utilities. One of the many important tasks that the kernel's memory-management subsystem must handle is keeping track of how pages of memory are mapped into the address spaces of the processes running on the system. As long as mappings to a given page exist, that page must be kept in place. As it turns out, tracking these mappings is harder than it seems it should be, and the move to folios within the memory-management subsystem is adding some complexities of its own. Organizations relying on open-source software have a wide range of tools, scorecards, and methodologies to try to assess security, legal, and other risks inherent in their so-called supply chain. However, Max Mehl argued recently in a short talk at FOSS Backstage in Berlin (and online) that all of this objective information and data is insufficient to truly understand and address risk. Worse, this information doesn't provide options to improve the situation and encourages a passive mindset. Mehl, who works as part of the CTO group at DB Systel, encouraged better risk assessment using qualitative data and direct participation in open source.

Charles Choi has announced the release of the Casual Make: a menu-driven interface, implemented as part of the Casual suite of tools, for Makefile Mode in GNU Emacs. Emacs supports makefile editing with make-mode which has a mix of useful and half-baked (though thankfully obsoleted in 30.1) commands. It is from this substrate that I'm happy to announce the next Casual user interface: Casual Make. Of particular note to Casual Make is its attention to authoring and identifying automatic variables whose arcane syntax is un-memorizable. Want to know what $> means? Just select it in the makefile and use the . binding in the Casual Make menu to identify what it does in the mini-buffer. Casual Make is part of Casual 2.4.0, released on March 12 and is available from MELPA. The 2.4.0 update to Casual also includes documentation in the Info format for the first time.  ( 1 min )

When the 6.14 kernel is released later this month, it will include the usual set of internal changes that users should never notice, with the possible exception of changes that bring performance improvements. One of those changes is frozen pages, a memory-management optimization that should fly mostly under the radar. When Hannes Reinecke reported a crash in 6.14, though, frozen pages suddenly came into view. There is a workaround for this problem, but it seems there is a fair amount of work to be done that nobody had counted on to solve the problem properly.

The experimental native image generation feature of Gemini 2.0 Flash – allowing for the combination of text and images, conversational image editing, and leveraging real-world knowledge for contextual visuals – is now available for developers to test through Google AI Studio and the Gemini API.

Gemma 3 1B, a new small language model for mobile and web applications via Google AI Edge, is now available, with increased efficiency, improved performance, and offline availability.

ShieldGemma 2, built on Gemma 3, is a 4 billion parameter model that can be used as an input filter for vision language models or an output filter for image generation systems, and is designed to respond to a wide range of diverse and nuanced imagery.

Gemma 3 is a new, advanced version of the Gemma open-model family featuring multimodality, longer context windows, and improved language capabilities, with various sizes and deployment options for developers to experiment.

On February 25, the Python Software Foundation (PSF), which runs the Python Package Index (PyPI), announced new terms of service (ToS) for the repository. That has led to some questions about the new ToS, and the process of coming up with them. For one thing, the previous terms of use for the service were shorter and simpler, but there are other concerns with specific wording in the new agreement.

Damien Neil has written an article for the Go Blog about path traversal vulnerabilities and the os.Root API added in Go 1.24 to help prevent them. root.Open("a/../b") is permitted. Filenames are resolved using the semantics of the local platform: On Unix systems, this will follow any symlink in "a" (so long as that link does not escape the root); while on Windows systems this will open "b" (even if "a" does not exist).

The Zig project has announced the release of the 0.14 version of the language, including changes from more than 250 contributors. Zig is a low-level, memory-unsafe programming language that aims to compete with C instead of depending on it. Even though the language has not yet had a stable release, there are a number of projects using it as an alternative to C with better metaprogramming. While the project's release schedule has been a bit inconsistent, with the release of version 0.14 being delayed several times, the release contains a number of new convenience features, broader architecture support, and the next steps toward removing Zig's dependency on LLVM.

The LLVM project's Fortran compiler, which has for many years gone by the name "flang-new", will now simply be "flang", starting from LLVM's 20.1.0 release on March 4. The announcement, which includes details about the history of flang, comes after a long period of development and discussion. The community has considered renaming flang several times before now, but has always held off out of a feeling that the compiler was not yet ready. Now, the members of the project believe that flang has become stable and complete enough to earn its name. We are almost 10 years from the first announcement of what would become LLVM Flang. In the LLVM monorepo alone there have been close to 10,000 commits from around 400 different contributors. Undoubtedly more in Classic Flang before that.

The Python project's recent switch to a tail-calling interpreter may not provide as large a speed advantage as initially thought. A blog post from Nelson Elhage gives the details. In short, switching to a tail-call-based interpreter accidentally works around an unfixed regression in LLVM 19. On other compilers, the performance benefit (while still present) is more moderate. When the tail-call interpreter was announced, I was surprised and impressed by the performance improvements, but also confused: I'm not an expert, but I'm passingly-familiar with modern CPU hardware, compilers, and interpreter design, and I couldn't explain why this change would be so effective. I became curious – and perhaps slightly obsessed – and the reports in this post are the result of a few weeks of off-and-on compiling and benchmarking and disassembly of dozens of different Python binaries, in an attempt to understand what I was seeing.

One of the advantages of the Rust type system is its ability to encapsulate requirements about the state of the program in the type system; often, this state includes which locks must be held to be able to carry out specific operations. C lacks the ability to express these requirements, but there would be obvious benefits if that kind of feature could be grafted onto the language. The Clang compiler has made some strides in that direction with its thread-safety analysis feature; two developers have been independently working to take advantage of that work for the kernel.

The 6.6.82 stable kernel has been released. "All i386 users of the 6.6 kernel series must upgrade (as they skipped the last release.) All other arches can skip this one as it should not affect them."

I wanted to deploy a network of Zigbee sensors in a remote location. The location had no "IT infrastructure" at all. The only connectivity available was LTE so I picked a modern router supported by OpenWRT - the Zyxel LTE3301-PLUS. My favorite Zigbee setup is Zigbee2MQTT and the Sonoff ZBDongle-P as it never caused me any trouble. There are various other Zigbee coordinators with Ethernet connectivity but I prefer to stick to setup I know (and is also the cheapest because the router already provides one USB port 😁). Zigbee2MQTT is a node.js app and it is too large to run on a router. What could I do to avoid installing another box?

Matthieu Clemenceau has published a status update on Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) development to the Ubuntu Discourse forum. This includes updates on Ubuntu's adoption of Dracut as an alternative to initramfs-tools, a move to a single ISO for arm64 devices rather than device-specific images, and reverting the planned O3 optimization flags for Plucky Puffin. announced plans to enable the O3 optimization level for all Ubuntu packages by default. As part of this effort, we conducted extensive benchmarking, which revealed that while some workloads saw improvements, overall system performance slightly declined, and binary sizes increased. On January 20, Thomas Weißschuh shared a new patch set implementing an alternate method for checking the integrity of loadable kernel modules. This mechanism, which checks module integrity based on hashes computed at build time instead of using cryptographic signatures, could enable reproducible kernel builds in more contexts. Several distributions have already expressed interest in the patch set if Weißschuh can get it into the kernel.

The kernel project has usually been willing to make fundamental internal changes if they lead to a better kernel in the end. The project also, though, goes out of its way to avoid breaking interfaces that have been exposed to user space, even if programs come to rely on behavior that was never documented. Sometimes, those two principles come into conflict, leading to a situation where fixing problems within the kernel is either difficult or impossible. This sort of situation has been impeding performance improvements in the kernel's POSIX timers implementation for some time, but it appears that a solution has been found.

Ted Unangst published dude, where are your syscalls? on flak yesterday, with a neat demonstration of OpenBSD’s pinsyscall security feature, whereby only pre-registered addresses are allowed to make system calls. Whether it strengthens or weakens security is up for debate, but regardless it’s an interesting, low-level programming challenge. The Google Bug Hunters blog has a detailed description of how a vulnerability in AMD's microcode-patching functionality was discovered and exploited; the authors have also released a set of tools to assist with this kind of research in the future. Secure hash functions are designed in such a way that there is no secret key, and there is no way to use knowledge of the intermediate state in order to generate a collision. However, CMAC was not designed as a hash function, and therefore it is a weak hash function against an adversary who has the key. Remember that every AMD Zen CPU has to have the same AES-CMAC key in order to successfully calculate the hash of the AMD public key and the microcode patch contents. Therefore, the key only needs to be revealed from a single CPU in order to compromise all other CPUs using the same key. This opens up the potential for hardware attacks (e.g., reading the key from ROM with a scanning electron microscope), side-channel attacks (e.g., using Correlation Power Analysis to leak the key during validation), or other software or hardware attacks that can somehow reveal the key. In summary, it is a safe assumption that such a key will not remain secret forever.

Version 2.0.0 of FerretDB has been released. FerretDB is an open-source alternative to MongoDB, which switched to a non-open license in 2018, built on top of PostgreSQL. This release utilizes the DocumentDB PostgreSQL extension for better performance, adds vector search, and replication.

Functional programming languages have a long association with graphs. In the 1990s, it was even thought that parallel graph-reduction architectures could make functional programming languages much faster than their imperative counterparts. Alas, that prediction mostly failed to materialize. Even though graphs are still used as a theoretical formalism in order to define and optimize functional languages (such as Haskell's spineless tagless graph-machine), they are still mostly compiled down to the same old non-parallel assembly code that every other language uses. Now, two projects — Bend and Vine — have sprung up attempting to change that, and prove that parallel graph reduction can be a useful technique for real programs.

The Xen Project has announced the release of Xen 4.20. This release adds support for AMD Zen 5 CPUs, improved compliance with the MISRA C standard, work on PCI-passthrough on Arm, and more. Xen 4.20 also removes support for Xeon Phi CPUs, which were discontinued in 2018. See the feature list and release notes for more information.

Version 136.0 of the Thunderbird Desktop mail client has been released. The release includes a quick toggle for adapting messages to dark mode, and a new "Appearance" setting to control message threading and sorting order globally, as well as a number of bug fixes. Version 12.3 of Linux From Scratch (LFS) has been released, along with Beyond Linux From Scratch (BLFS) 12.3. LFS provides step-by-step instructions on building a customized Linux system entirely from source, and BLFS helps to extend an LFS installation into a more usable system. Notable changes in this release include toolchain updates to GNU Binutils 2.44, GNU C Library (glibc) 2.41, and Linux 6.13.2. The Changelog has a full list of changes since the previous stable release.
